Portable space heaters are one of the leading causes of home electrical fires every winter. In most cases, it's not the heater itself that fails: it's the circuit it's plugged into. If you're also preparing your home for cold weather, our winter storm electrical prep guide covers the broader picture.
Why space heaters are different
Most portable space heaters draw close to 1,500 watts, which is roughly the maximum a standard 15-amp household circuit breaker can safely handle on its own. Add a lamp, a phone charger, or anything else on that same circuit, and you're at or past the limit. That's why space heaters trip breakers so often: the breaker is doing exactly what it's designed to do.
Rules that actually prevent problems
- Plug directly into a wall outlet. Never use an extension cord or power strip, which aren't rated for sustained heater loads.
- One heater per circuit, and avoid running other high-draw appliances on the same circuit at the same time.
- Check the outlet's condition. A warm outlet plate or a loose-fitting plug is a sign the outlet itself needs attention, not just a different heater.
- Never leave a space heater running unattended or overnight, regardless of the circuit's condition.
When a breaker trip means more than "unplug something"
An occasional trip when you've got too much running is normal circuit protection working correctly. A circuit breaker that trips immediately, won't reset, or feels hot to the touch is a different problem. It usually means the breaker or the circuit wiring has degraded and needs an electrician's inspection, not just a lighter load. Our post on signs you need an emergency electrician can help you decide whether the situation warrants an urgent call.
If space heaters are a permanent part of how you heat a room every winter, it's often worth having a dedicated circuit installed. Our electrical repair and service team in Holyoke can assess your panel and add a circuit rather than letting you routinely overload a general-purpose one. If your panel is aging, it may also be time to review the signs your electrical panel needs an upgrade.
