Holiday Lighting Installation: A Safety and Load Guide

Holiday lighting causes a predictable spike in electrical fires and outlet failures every year, and it's almost always from the same handful of preventable mistakes.

Load, not just outlets

A single 15-amp circuit can be overloaded fast once you add multiple light strands, an inflatable decoration, and a space heater in the garage. Before you plug in, add up the wattage of everything on that circuit rather than assuming "it fits in the outlet, so it's fine."

Indoor vs. outdoor rated

Outdoor-rated cords and lights are built to handle moisture and temperature swings that indoor-rated products aren't. Running indoor extension cords outside, even briefly, is one of the most common causes of holiday electrical fires. Outdoor installations should always use a ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI)-protected outlet to cut power immediately if a fault is detected.

Where a dedicated circuit pays off

If your holiday display has grown over the years (more strands, more inflatables, a timer system), it may have outgrown the general-purpose circuit it started on. A dedicated exterior circuit with its own GFCI-protected outlet means your display doesn't compete with the refrigerator or the living room for capacity, and it removes the guesswork about what else is sharing that circuit. If you're unsure whether your panel can support the addition, an electrical engineer assessment can confirm capacity before you commit to the install.

A quick pre-season checklist

If you're planning a larger display this year, our lighting contractors can install a dedicated, properly grounded exterior circuit before the season starts. It's worth doing once rather than troubleshooting a tripped breaker every night in December. You may also want to review our outdoor landscape lighting guide for ideas on making a permanent exterior circuit work year-round.
